10 Natural Rememdies for Colds and Winter Sickness

10 Natural Rememdies for Colds and Winter Sickness
Undoubtedly, you or someone you know is suffering temporarily from the flu, a cold, or a sinus infection.  It’s not fun, but it can be made more bearable.  The list of 10 is not all inclusive, but will give you the right direction in treating your symptoms naturally.  Treating them naturally will allow your body to recover faster now and in the future.  So go on, let your body do what it was designed to do.

Ok, on to the list.  Here is your list of 10:

1. Chiropractic
1. Chiropractic

1. Chiropractic: Of course, right?  A study done by Ronald Pero, Ph.D., chief of cancer prevention research at New York’s Preventative Medicine Institute and professor of Medicine found those who receive regular adjustments had 200% greater immune-competence, which is 400% greater than those with serious disease.  Interestingly enough, immune-competence did not show any decline with age, which means people of all ages benefit.  Now THAT is some good news.

2. Sleep
2. Sleep

2. Sleep: Yes, this can be your best friend when you are up against a winter sickness.  Don’t find reasons why you can’t sleep.  Just do it.  Your will feel better and recover faster.

3. NeilMed Sinus Rinse
3. NeilMed Sinus Rinse

3. NeilMed SinusRinse (adults) NoseFrida Snot Sucker (kids) :  This is better than blowing your nose.  When you are stuffed up blowing your nose too much may cause more problems.  Blowing your nose doesn’t open up your nasal passage, it actually does the opposite.   SinusRinse allows full irrigation.  Grossed out yet?  Well, this will be your best friend soon, and once you get the hang of how to use this thing you will literally see why I say it’s better than blowing your nose.

4. Zinc
4. Zinc

4. Zinc: According to a Cochrane Database Review of the medical research on zinc, when taken within one day of the first symptoms, zinc can cut down the duration of a cold by about 24 hours. It was also found to greatly reduce the severity of symptoms.  A recent article suggests that Zinc is one of the best supplements to help fight the flu and or cold.  Zinc can be found in oysters, poultry, nuts, seeds and unsweetened chocolate (that’s a win).  If you are going to buy a zinc supplement, make sure it is chelated zinc as this will help with absorption. 5. Mushroom
5. Mushroom

5. Mushrooms: While most people think only of eating the fleshy fruiting body of the mushroom (the part that grows above ground), most of the benefits are actually located in their complex root structure, called the mycelium. Beta glucans and proteoglycans are the primary biologically active compounds in the mushroom fruit body and mycelia that support your immune system. The beta glucans are special proteins with unique side-branching patterns that “fit” perfectly with cellular receptor sites that support your immune system, just like a key in a lock.  Mushrooms also contain trace minerals, polysaccharides, amino acids and fiber that support your health by protecting against environmental stressors; supporting your detoxification process; and promoting healthy gut flora and optimal digestion, just to name a few of the known health benefits.

6. Oregano
6. Oregano

6. Oregano Oil: The higher the carvacrol concentration, the more effective it is. Carvacrol is the most active antimicrobial agent in oregano oil.

7. Propolis
7. Propolis

7. Propolis: A bee resin and one of the most broad-spectrum antimicrobial compounds in the world; propolis is also the richest source of caffeic acid and apigenin, two very important compounds that aid in immune response.

8. Tea
8. Tea

8. A tea made from a combination of elderflower, yarrow, boneset, linden, peppermint and ginger: drink it hot and often for combating a cold or flu. It causes you to sweat, which is helpful for eradicating a virus from your system.

9. Olive Leaf Extract
9. Olive Leaf Extract

9. Olive leaf extract: Ancient Egyptians and Mediterranean cultures used it for a variety of health-promoting uses and it is widely known as a natural, non-toxic immune system builder.

10. Chicken Soup
10. Chicken Soup

10. Chicken soup: Grandma was right all along.  Isn’t it interesting that long ago chicken noodle soup was a therapeutic remedy for a cold?  They didn’t have all of the technology and research we have today to figure out why, they just knew it worked.  We now know that chicken contains a natural amino acid called cysteine, which can thin the mucus in your lungs and make it less sticky so you can expel it more easily. For best results, make up a fresh batch yourself (or ask a friend or family member to do so) and make the soup hot and spicy with plenty of pepper. The spices will trigger a sudden release of watery fluids in your mouth, throat, and lungs, which will help thin down the respiratory mucus so it’s easier to cough up and expel.

11. Vitamin C
11. Vitamin C

11. Vitamin C:  Ok we said this was going to be a list of 10, but come on, this is probably the most talked about when you get a cold, so that’s why I put it as our #11.  It is a very potent antioxidant.  Use a natural form such as acerola, which contains associated micronutrients. You can take several grams every hour till you are better unless you start developing loose stools.
