Those who suffer with asthma have seen a drastic change in their symptoms after chiropractic care.

Chiropractic is not a cure for asthma, however, many who suffer from asthma report improvement by receiving chiropractic care.  There is research that suggests a link between the spinal column, the nervous system and the respiratory system.  This may be why many report improved breathing after using chiropractic care.

Countless Causes

Asthma cases seem to be rising.  Some think it’s due to a combination of factors, especially the increase of chemicals in our environment.  The increased use of cesarean births, antibiotics and our fascination with germ killing has been cited as possible causes to the increase in asthma cases.  If these factors were the only issue, why couldn’t all living in the same house and breathing the same air, suffer equally?

Traditional Treatment

Prescription inhalers, known as corticosteroids, are typically prescribed for the treatment of asthma.  Corticosteroids decrease the inflammation in the airways and allow better air flow in times of crisis.  Continued corticosteroid use, however, can be dangerous as the steroids lower your body’s immune response.

The Chiropractic Connection

Your diaphragm is the primary muscles used for breathing.  Nerves that control each breath you take leave your brain and exit the spinal word in the mid-neck (C3, C4, C5) area.  Spinal problems in this area can have a profound affect on the nerve supply and function of the diaphragm.

By reducing vertebral subluxations in the spine, we can reduce nerve interference and restore proper nervous system control of the diaphragm and lungs.
