When back pain starts running your day

It may be time to come in if:

  • Your lower back is stiff every morning and takes an hour to loosen up
  • Sitting at work or in the car makes it ache by the afternoon
  • Bending, lifting kids, or yard work sets it off for days
  • Pain shoots into your hip, buttock, or down your leg
  • It keeps coming back after massage, stretching, or pain medication wears off
  • You’ve been told you have a bulging or herniated disc and want to avoid surgery

If any of these fit, the next step is a proper exam to find out why.

What causes back pain

Most back pain comes from one of three places, and often a mix of them:

  • Joints: The small joints on the back of each vertebra are packed with nerves. When they stop moving well, the area around them gets stiff, inflamed and sore.
  • Discs: The cushions between your vertebrae can bulge or herniate and press on nearby nerves. Disc problems often cause pain, tingling or numbness that travels into the leg.
  • Muscles: When the spine isn’t moving or loading evenly, the muscles around it tighten up to protect it, which adds its own layer of pain.

Treating only the sore spot is why back pain so often comes back. We look at all three.

How we get you moving again

Every plan starts with your exam, and only includes what your back actually needs:

Your first visit

  1. Talk: We listen to how your pain started, what makes it better or worse, and what you want to get back to.
  2. Exam: A hands-on orthopedic and neurological exam, with X-rays when they’re needed to see what’s going on.
  3. Plan: We explain what we found in plain language, what we recommend, how many visits to expect and what it costs, before you commit to anything.
  4. Start feeling better: When it’s appropriate, most patients receive their first treatment the same day.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on what’s causing your pain and how long you’ve had it. A recent strain may settle in a few visits; a disc problem or pain you’ve had for years usually takes longer. You’ll get a specific recommendation after your exam.

Not always. We take them when your history or exam suggests they’ll change your treatment, for example after an injury or with pain traveling into your leg.

Yes. Chiropractic care is a widely used, non-invasive approach to back pain. Your exam also screens for anything that needs a referral to another provider, and we’ll tell you if that’s the case.

No. You can schedule directly with us.

Many patients with disc problems come to us looking for a non-surgical option first. We’ll tell you honestly whether you’re a good candidate for decompression and conservative care.
