Sciatica Treatment in Meridian & West Boise

Woman sitting in a chair pressing on her hip and glute from sciatica pain

Sit, walk and sleep again without pain shooting down your leg.

Sciatica is pain, tingling or numbness that runs from your low back or buttock down your leg. It usually means a nerve is being irritated, most often by a disc or stiff joints in the low back. Our chiropractors find what’s pressing on the nerve and work to take the pressure off, without surgery or long-term medication.

When sciatica starts running your day

Patients usually come to us when:

  • Pain shoots from your low back or buttock down the back of your leg
  • Sitting in the car or at your desk makes it worse
  • You have tingling, numbness or “pins and needles” in your leg or foot
  • It hurts to bend over, cough or sneeze
  • You’ve been told you have a herniated or bulging disc
  • Medication and stretching only take the edge off

What causes sciatica

The sciatic nerve runs from your low back, through your hip and down each leg. Anything that squeezes or irritates it along the way can cause sciatica. The most common causes we see:

  • Herniated or bulging disc: A disc in the low back pushes on the nerve root where it leaves the spine.
  • Stiff, irritated joints: Joints in the low back and pelvis that stop moving well can inflame the area around the nerve.
  • Narrowing and wear: Over time, discs and joints can wear down and crowd the space the nerve passes through.
  • Tight hip muscles: The piriformis and other deep hip muscles can tighten around the nerve.
  • Pregnancy: Changes in posture and the pelvis often bring on sciatica. See our prenatal chiropractic page.

How we get you moving again

Every plan starts with your exam and only includes what you need:

  • Non-surgical spinal decompression to gently take pressure off irritated discs and nerves, often the first thing we look at for disc-related sciatica
  • Chiropractic adjustments to restore motion to stiff low-back and pelvic joints
  • Therapeutic massage to release tight hip and glute muscles around the nerve
  • Corrective therapy to strengthen your core and hips so the pain doesn’t keep coming back

Most sciatica starts in the low back. See our back pain treatment page for more.

Get care right away (call 911 or go to the ER) if you lose bladder or bowel control, have numbness in your groin or inner thighs, or your leg weakness is getting worse quickly.

Your first visit

  1. Talk: We listen to how your sciatica started, where you feel it, and what makes it better or worse.
  2. Exam: We test your nerves, reflexes, strength and movement, with X-rays when they’re needed.
  3. Plan: We explain what’s irritating the nerve in plain language, what we recommend, how many visits to expect and what it costs.
  4. Start feeling better: When it’s appropriate, most patients receive their first treatment the same day.
