Here’s something we hear all the time: “I felt totally fine at the scene. I didn’t even think I was hurt. Then two days later I could barely turn my head.”
If that sounds like you, you’re not imagining it, and you’re not being dramatic. It’s one of the most common things that happens after a car accident, even a fender bender in a parking lot. Here’s why, and what to do about it.
Why the pain shows up late
In a crash, your head and neck snap forward and back in a fraction of a second. Your body floods with adrenaline, which is great for getting through the moment and terrible at telling you what got hurt. Over the next day or two, as the adrenaline wears off and the inflammation sets in, the stiffness and soreness show up.
Usually it starts as a stiff, sore neck, tightness between the shoulder blades, or a headache at the base of your skull. Over the next week or two, some people notice it spreading into the shoulders or low back, trouble sleeping, or a neck that just won’t loosen up. If you’re a few weeks out and still dealing with headaches, stiffness or tingling into your arms, that’s your body telling you it isn’t healing on its own.
The mistakes we see most
The big one is waiting to see if it goes away. Some people get lucky. A lot don’t, and the longer a neck injury goes untreated, the longer it usually takes to calm down. Waiting can also make an insurance claim harder, because the gap between the accident and your first visit matters.
The other common mistake is resting too much. A day or two of taking it easy is fine, but a stiff neck usually does better with gentle movement than a week on the couch. And please don’t write it off as “just whiplash.” Whiplash can involve joints, muscles, ligaments and nerves, and getting the right neck pain treatment starts with knowing which ones.
When to go to the ER first
If you have a severe headache, confusion, numbness or weakness in your arms or legs, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest or belly pain, or pain that’s getting worse fast, go to the emergency room. Once the serious stuff is ruled out, we can help with the rest of your recovery.
What happens when you come see us
We’ll sit down and talk about the accident and how you’ve been feeling since. Then we do a thorough exam, with X-rays if they’re needed, and one of our doctors walks you through what we found in plain English. Most people start treatment that same day.
Care usually combines gentle adjustments, massage for the muscles that have been guarding and tightening up, and corrective therapy to rebuild strength as you heal. We document everything carefully, bill your auto insurance med-pay, and work with your attorney if you have one, so you can focus on feeling better instead of paperwork. You can read more about our car accident injury care.
Even if it was a small accident, it’s worth getting checked, especially if new aches are creeping in days later. We’re right off Eagle Road at Wainwright, on the Meridian and West Boise line. You don’t need a referral, and we take most insurance. Schedule your first visit or give us a call at (208) 939-0775.
